People

DEED is a collaborative effort between students and faculty of The New School, artisan groups in emerging economies, generous donors and foundations, external partners, and retailers. For people involved in each project, refer to our projects page.

Faculty

 – from Parsons School of Design and the Graduate Program in International Affairs co-founded and run our fieldwork programs since 2007. Additionally, they disseminate our work as guest lecturers, presenters at conferences, and in publications.

Artisans

 – have amazed, inspired, and worked with us in Guatemala, Colombia, and more places to come! Most of the craftspeople with whom we have worked are master weavers (using both backstrap and floor looms as well as handweaving techniques). We’ve also learned with artisan specialists in beading, basket weaving, and woodworking.

Partners

 – local organizations who connect us with the Artisans and sometimes help us get funding. They are key to the long-term sustainable success of our projects, as they diminish the dependency between the artisan groups and our lab.

Students

 – from all schools and disciplines are welcome. More than 50 New School students have participated in our fieldwork programs. Parsons and Schools for Public Engagement students have come from undergraduate programs in design & technology, fashion design, integrated design, product design, and strategic design and management; and from graduate programs in international affairs, non-profit management, organizational change & management, strategic design & management, and. Select students also participate as research fellows in the lab.

Interns

 – in both New York City and our various sites, young creative professionals keep the projects alive outside of the fieldwork time. They are key to the long-term sustainable success of our projects, as they diminish the dependency between the artisan groups and our lab.
